Brown Rat

Rattus norvegicus

The most common species of rat in the UK by far. Can cause significant damage to property, stock and structure. Known to spread 35 diseases worldwide including Foot and Mouth and Leptospirosis, they pose a serious risk to public health. The teeth of a rodent never stop growing and they therefore constantly gnaw to keep them maintained. This can cause financial damage to farm machinery, vehicles and electrics, and has been known to start fires. They are also harmful to a business’ brand image and their presence can violate food and public safety legislation.
We usually control rats by strategic use of rodenticide or trapping, alongside constant hygiene and proofing improvements and environmental management. The combination of destruction methods with restriction and prevention is labelled ‘IPM - Integrated Pest Management’, and is an industry standard approach to rodent control.

Wasps

As the weather gets warmer in the spring, queen wasps emerge and begin working on their new nests. By the summer time, colonies are at their busiest - it’s at this time that wasps tend to become a nuisance, as the adults switch their attention to sweeter foods, bringing them closer to us humans. Their sting can be painful and cause allergic reactions in some people.

Wasps can be easily confused with bees, which are generally harmless to us and are hugely beneficial to the environment. Wasps will have conspicuous yellow and black horizontal markings on their abdomen, while bees are a more general browny-yellow colour all over.

Wasps can become very aggressive and it is recommended that a professional pest controller is always used when thinking about treating an active nest.

We also treat hornets.

A note on bees: At Banish we avoid treating bees, but please feel free to get in touch if you have a problem with them - we may be able to find a local beekeeper to rehome them for you.
